Lucha Legends is a video slot created by Microgaming in 2018. It takes inspiration from the colourful Mexican wrestling scene. And trust us, Mexican wrestling is like nothing you’ve seen before! It has become a culture of its own, centred around masks, wrestling families and the luchadores themselves! Both the Super Wild and free spins special features include these masked wrestlers.
When it comes to graphics, this release easily fits into the slightly above average category. We like the glow effect that’s enabled when you turn on the Power-up mode. Wrestlers will also make an appearance on the board, performing their best moves to activate Super Wilds! But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Our two major gripes are a boring background image and some symbol designs being dull.
Keep in mind, we said “some”. There are plenty of icons that look absolutely great and hilarious. Each of the luchadores is also a symbol and they’re all very distinct from each other. The announcer girl and the referee are both eye-catching in their own way, as well! So what’s the problem? As is often the case, it’s the playing card royals. They’re boring and do nothing to stand out compared to other symbols.
The game is played on a 5x3 board with 25 fixed paylines. The layout is very similar to the Microgaming’s mobile version, possibly as yet another step towards platform parity.
Still, some things stay the same. The Spin button is still a big, blocky button, instead of a big circle that’s easy to tap. The Autoplay option is also there, even if it is absolutely bare bones. To change your total bet, press the plus and minus buttons until you find the stake that suits you best. You can wager between $0.25 and $37.50 per spin.
Collect three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions, starting from the leftmost reel to be granted a win! Said wins have to follow one of 25 active paylines or they will not count. Scatters are exempt from this rule, but instead have to follow a different one.
Power-up Mode is an optional toggle that players can use to enhance their other special features. Of course, this doesn’t come free – it doubles your current wager upon being activated.
Super Wilds are randomly activated and can appear both during normal gameplay and free spins. When Wild is part of a winning combination, one of the four luchadores may pop up and smash it! This turns the regular Wild into Super Wild and it can have one of two effects.
Finally, collect three Scatters in the first, third and fifth position on the board to win 10 free spins. Collecting two or three Scatters while the bonus is being played grant one or ten more free spins. During the special feature, more valuable symbols have a higher chance of appearing. In addition, Super Wilds are always activated when Wild appears.
It feels like with each slot Microgaming comes one step closer to combining desktop and mobile versions. Besides minor UI differences, there are no differences between the two.
