Arabian Nights – a set of tales from the Middle East originally known as the One Thousand and One Nights – framed as the beautiful Scheherazade telling her husband Shahryār of the various magical tales. The stories themselves all take root in folklore of mostly Arabian, Persian and Egyptian folklore – and encompass many well known tales such as Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Sinbad, Aladdin’s Lamp, and so on.
This mystical set of tales Net Entertainment ambitiously undertook in effort to make their own slot game – tying in the various themes of the stories into their game. Even at first glance, the Arabian theme is obvious – with the minarets in the background, and camels, tents and scimitars appearing as symbols in the game, the slot attempts to lure you into the often unexplored sense of Arabian culture.
The symbols you need to match differ – you have the standard five poker symbols – from nines to kings, as well as three Arabian themed symbols – camels, tents, and scimitars. Added to this are two special symbols – the lamp, which acts as a scatter – hit two or more lamps, and you gain a prize equal to a multiple of your wager for that spin. The second special symbol is the Arabian man, who acts as a wild card, and is able to replace any other symbol to secure you a win on that particular line. And if that isn’t good enough, any winning combination made with him is doubled.
So, what of the game? Arabian Nights is a five reel, ten-line slot machine. While the initial interface may be a touch confusing, you will quickly pick up a few basics – you can only place one ‘coin’ on a single line.
To get a match, you must have identical symbols line up from left to right along the line. Each coin is locked at a value of €0.50, meaning at most, you can bet five euros per spin.
Not all the lines are straight – if you are inexperienced with slot machines, it may confuse you for a first few times. However, it does give you more chances at winning – rather than just hoping you get matching symbols along one line, the more coins you spend, the more you increase your odds at matching and earning a prize.
Arabian Nights grants it’s players free spins – the catch? Line up three lamp symbols anywhere on the reels, and the game rewards you with a whopping fifteen free spins. Considering three lamps also nets you a 3x multiplier, it’s definitely a welcome sign to see.
The theme stays to its Arabian roots, though it certainly won’t impress anyone with the graphics it displays – they are simplistic, though the lack of ‘flash’ does assist in not distracting the player.
There is also a notable lack of music – apart from the sounds will hear while spinning, the only other notable sounds are the ones of crickets chirping in the background.
In the end, the game offers a relaxing experience to play, and an enjoyable online slot machine. Provided you play ten coins at a time, the game offers you great chances at winning – as you are capped at five euros, Arabian Nights provides a great progressive jackpot if you can land it. If you can stick by the somewhat unintuitive interface at the beginning of the game, you are bound to have a blast.
