By its purpose slot machine is ultimately doomed to winnings, triumphs and victories As well as the gambler, fighting against this slot machine, – to losses, dramas and tragedies. A clear illustration of this can be the case, shown by Alan Vaike in his book “Encyclopedia of games of chance”.
“…One of such inveterate gamblers was a young Indian businessman, who arrived in Tokyo on business. While he was having breakfast in a small cafe, he noticed in the corner four slot machines, working on one lever. The curious man did not resist the temptation of trying his luck: dropped in each of slot machines one coin and pulled the lever. The winning amounted to eight coins. Thus began an unprecedented gambling marathon, which lasted six days. During this time he pulled the lever of the slot 70 000 times, having won a total sum of $ 1500, which again spent on the game, adding to them a hundred dollars of his own money. Although at times slot machines paid him substantial sums there was no case, except for the first attempt, when the winning exceeded the bet more than in one and a half times. At the end of six-day madness the Indian man returned home and persuaded the company management to invest money from the export of spices, fruit and medicinal products in the import of American slot machines. The unusual commercial operation brought the company a huge profit and a great success.”
Inspite of the fact that any slot machine provides its owner or the tenant with a permanent solid income, there will always be people ready for the sake of the additional profits to the shameless fraud of customers and adjusting the slot so that the payments did not exceed 20 per cent of money, descended into it. But gamblers, in turn, did not remain in debt. At the dawn of a universal passion to slot machines there were a lot of rough attempts to outwit an iron opponent. Craftsmen, drilling holes in the metal case of a slot machine, pushed inside pieces of wire, trying to jam the receiving device in the “paid” position or, on the contrary, with a metal probe tried to open the feed roll of the drum, making the coins drop out inside. However, as it is known, every action immediately gives rise to resistance. Manufacturers of slot machines at once invented new ways to protect their creations from the zealous lovers of easy money. All the same one of the ways to “inflate” slot machines, namely “station of time of the activation of a disc”, proved a hard nut to crack. It was difficult to find, as there were no external signs of interference in the normal operation of the mechanism of the slot.
An invisible battle for the money, in which the owners of the halls of slot machines lost $500 million, launched in the US in the forties of the 20TH century. And these millions of dollars passed into the hands of those whom the owners of casinos named as outlaws and criminals; they called themselves the “temp-boys”.
It was a lot of groups, learned to consistently win “the one-armed bandits “. In this case there was so subtle observation that about five years, the owners of casinos could not understand the matter, and fought with the “temp-boys”, not delving into the intricacies. The tool for “honest” extraction of money from the owners of the halls of slot machines was RNG – Random Number Generator. The simplest and the most famous of all the RNG is betting dice. THE RNG also includes a deck of cards, a lotto drum and a roulette wheel. The drum of the “one-armed bandit” is from the same company.
How can you calculate the probability of loss at the same time of three winning symbols (777) – 1 to 7999. At the same time the principle of the RNG does not give any guarantees that the 777 will fall out of the slot machine, even on 7999-th time. However, it may also happen that the 777 will fall for the first time, three times in a row, 10 times in a row. Theoretically it can be, but in practice, such cases are not known. That’s why when in casinos began to appear people who have winning combinations on the slot machines fallen to 10-20 times in a row, it was a terrible sign, posing a threat to the very existence of the gambling business. And the war began. At first, nobody understood anything. Both sides – “temp-boys” and casino – sincerely believed that the problem was based on some fundamental shortcomings of the slot machines, or, simply speaking, that the “temp-boys defeated the Great Uncertainty, a gold mine of RNG. Casinos of Nevada, the foundation of which was laid by the famous gangster Bugsy Siegel, leaned across the methods inherent to their founder of. At first, they only caught “temp-boys”, and having kicked them, drove them away, prohibiting them to return on the grounds that the territory of the casino was a private property. But the rumor of a gold vein spawned a real fever; the secret of the “temp-boys” began to be sold on the black market. In Nevada came crowds of miners.
At once the owners became wild. In memory of those days and the events were the stories of how people were taken to the desert, their legs were broken by scraps of pipes and they were left to a slow painful death; as in the same desert graves were dug, and half-alive, maimed by the strikes of baseball bats, people were buried in them.
The essence of a great discovery of “temp-boys” was that if you pulled the handle of the “one-armed bandit” at a certain time (to the second), the slot machine repeats the just scored winning combination. The idea was very simple, but hard to achieve in practice. Firstly, the gambler must accurate to the second calculate the period of rotation of each of the disks of the slot between the time you press the lever up to a full stop of the disk. Secondly, it was necessary to remember the sequence of all 60 symbols for each of the three discs. Thirdly, the gambler needed a talent for mathematics. After the response time for the slot machine had been installed, you should be with a stopwatch in hand to calculate the number of seconds passed between lowering of the coins in the receiving slot and pressing the lever, including the slot machine. Noticing the original position of the symbols on all three disks and knowing their sequence, the gambler could – if his calculations were correct – make the disks rotate in a strictly specified number of seconds, after the coin launched a clockwork mechanism of the slot.
The rest was easy. Some number of coins was put into the slot machine at random until any winning combination appeared. When it fell out, the bet was exceeded to the maximum and the slot machine began to be milked, time after time repeating this combination.
The solution was very simple. The casinos then were equipped by mechanical slot machines, but they had one important drawback. On the mechanical slot machines the role of the RNG performs a set of drums, simply mounted on one axis. The movement of the handle of “one-armed bandit” is cocked, and then the spring, which begins to rotate the axis with freely sitting on her drums, is released. At the same time the mechanical timer, limiting the time of their rotation, is turned on. More precisely, the role of the timer was to stop the reels in turn: at first one, then another, then the third one. And the phenomenon, noted by “temp-boys”, in reality was that the timer does not turn on for about 15 seconds after the drums stop. And if once again the handle of “one-armed bandit” was pulled in the course of these 15 seconds, drums turned together in the same position. Of course, there was no 100% guarantee, drums still sometimes shifted, but the possibility of this did not exceed 20%. Of course, calculation and considerable skill were required from the “temp-boys”.
As soon as it was found out, the timer device of slot machine was changed. Now it was run by another small RNG, the interval of the timer began to vary from fractions of seconds to 15 seconds. And the RNG remained undefeated.
